Pella (Iowa), 1995.

The avalanche starts slow, and Amy tries to warn her sister, but she has lost her voice. Everything goes slower, even her blood. Her sister is on a different cliff wearing her red Minnie Mouse jacket. The snow is building up behind her and then there are the squirrels, tyrannosaur-sized, foaming at the mouth. The foam freezes as it cascades out from in between their glittering fangs, and Zoe is just standing there, smiling, frozen like she’s being photographed, and Amy tries so hard to call out she almost falls off her cliff. The frozen foam slides into the rest of the avalanche, and now, doubled, it is within just a few feet of Zoe.

A terrible pain tears through Amy’s back. But then she realizes she’s growing wings.
